Financial Aid

All students are encouraged to seek either university or national scholarships, fellowships, grants, or all of these to finance their education. The department of Anthropology has a limited number of teaching and research assistantships, which are offered on a competitive, scholastic basis. Teaching Assistants are hired by the department to assist the faculty in teaching, and the duties of the TA are varied. In general, a TA may be required to do such things as lead discussion groups, prepare and grade exams, projects, and essays, occasionally give lectures perform research relevant to the course, and show films. Other duties may be requested by an instructor from time to time. A limited number of Research Assistantships are available and are usually connected with specific research activities being conducted by individual professors. The stipend for a 9-month one-half time (20 hrs. per week) teaching assistantship currently is $12,400. A student with a half-time assistantship may carry 12 credit hours of graduate credit per semester.

Students should not expect to receive more than four semesters of university and/or departmental support. TAs and RAs may carry up to 12 credits per semester and should not be enrolled for less than nine hours. Finally, if money is needed for research or special training, it may be necessary to look for sources external to the university. This requires considerable planning and lead time
