General
Anthropology
The AnthroNet
The AnthroNet was created to facilitate access to Anthropological
sources on the Internet for anthropology graduate students and
faculty at the University of Virginia and for the world-wide
anthropological community as a whole.
American Anthropological Association (AAA)
Founded in 1902, the American Anthropological Association (AAA)
is the world's largest organization of individuals interested
in anthropology. Although there were several other American
anthropological societies in existence at the turn of the 20th
century, this new, national organization was formed "to
promote the science of anthropology, to stimulate and coordinate
the efforts of American anthropologists, to foster local and
other societies devoted to anthropology, to serve as a bond
among American anthropologists and anthropologic[al] organizations
present and prospective, and to publish and encourage the publication
of matter pertaining to anthropology" (AAA Articles of
Incorporation).
The Centre for
Social Anthropology and Computing
The aim of the Centre is to advance anthropology by developing
new methods and means for investigating anthropological problems,
to promote the use of computers in 'ordinary' anthropology,
and to provide advise and information resources for the anthropology
community worldwide.
The Society for Medical
Anthropology
The Society for Medical Anthropology (SMA) of the American Anthropological
Association was founded in 1971 to promote the study of anthropological
aspects of health, illness, health care, and related topics
and to encourage communication and utilization of the results
obtained from such studies. SMA members receive the Medical
Anthropology Quarterly.
The Society for Medical Anthropology, led by president Carole
Browner (UC Los Angeles), exists as a Section of the American
Anthropological Association (AAA), which has about 10,500 members.
The AAA's mission is to advance anthropology as the study of
all aspects of humankind and to foster the use of anthropological
knowledge in addressing human problems, and SMA's mission complements
this with a more specific focus on issues relevant to the anthropological
study of health and sickness.
Society for
Economic Botany
The Society for Economic Botany (SEB) was established in 1959
to foster and encourage scientific research, education, and
related activities on the past, present, and future uses of
plants, and the relationship between plants and people, and
to make the results of such research available to the scientific
community and the general public through meetings.
